The book is titled, Speeches and Forensic Arguments, by Daniel Webster. Printed in Boston by Perkins & Marvin, and Gray & Bowen, New York: Jonathan Leavitt. It is interesting to note that of all the fore-edge paintings in the collection that this particular volume is the only one that was printed in the United States. All the others were printed in England.

The finely executed painting is serene, light and airy and is simply titled New York City. It is an early view of lower Broadway with Saint Paul’s Chapel depicted on the right side. It’s interesting to note that Saint Paul’s Chapel and grounds were used by first responders working on the cleanup of the World Trade Center disaster.

Daniel Webster was an American statesman. He represented Massachusetts and New Hampshire and served as Secretary of State under presidents William Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. Born in 1782, he graduated from Dartmouth College, and became a leading lawyer in his time. He passed away in 1852.
