Description

The pastoral scene fore-edge painting comes from a book titled Opera Vergiliana. A beautiful painting of a Shepard with his dog tending to his flock of sheep. This book was edited by Badius Ascendius being two books in one volume. Publius Vergilius Maro was an Ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period. Jacques Mareschal

Published this book in Lyon Italy in 1527-1528, making it the second oldest book in the fore-edge painting collection. This particular volume happens to be a signed watercolor painting on the fanned fore-edge of the book as is the case with the nativity-painting, the gold gilt was scrapped off the fore-edge. John T Beer was the artist of this painting somewhere between 1897 and 1903. The Georgics was written in four books and the painting complements these writings. The Georgics comprised raising crops and trees, livestock and horses, and beekeeping and the quality of bees. The other part of this rare book contains the Aeneid, describing the journey of Aeneas, a warrior fleeing Troy to Italy.
