Whimsical Pieces

Whimsical or Fantastic shapes

In the late 1800’s in Victorian England wooden puzzle makers began making puzzle pieces referred to as whimsical or fantastic pieces that were puzzle pieces cut into recognizable shapes. Each of our puzzles incorporate many recognizable shapes and images that have a relationship to the paintings in the puzzles. The whimsicals add a degree of excitement and challenge to each puzzle. For instance in the Shakespeare painting the artist created an impressive watercolor painting of Prosperous, in the act of conjuring up a tempest, in the comedy titled “The Tempest” on the right side of the painting. On the left side is Hamlet, on the ramparts of Elsinore Castle, addressing the ghost of his father in one of Shakespeare’s tragic plays titled “Hamlet”. William Shakespeare appears in the center. We have diligently come up with over 40 whimsical pieces for this puzzle. We have strived to create the whimsical story to-have a relationship with the age of the book, the watercolor painting and to when the best guess on when the painting was done. Most of our paintings we consider to have been painted in the late 1800’s to into the early 1900’s.
