Description

Three volume set, The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments, and The Apocrapha. The three-volume set was printed in London England for the White, Cochran, and Company in 1815 the volumes bound in contemporary straight-grained red Morocco leather with the covers displaying gilt and blind borders enclosing a dove emblem. Even though the Bible was printed in 1815 my best guess is that the fore-edge paintings were probably done in the early part of 1900’s.

The fore-edge watercolor painting is Jesus, standing on Mount Precipice or also known as Mount of the leap of the lord, overlooking the city of Nazareth. It is believed by some to be the site of the rejection of Jesus described in the gospel of (Luke 4:29-30) The story tells about the people of Nazareth rejecting and nor accepting Jesus as the messiah and they tried to push him off the mountain. Jesus “he passed through the midst of them and went away.” On May 14, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Mass on this mountaintop during his visit to the holy land. Over 40,000 people participated.
